Magic milk painting - DIY

Have you ever painted milk?

My kids were amazed by this "magic milk paint" activity.  Over and over again they took turns "painting milk" using different food coloring to create different colorful creations.  This fun and easy DIY kid activity uses only a few ingredients you probably have in your house right now!

What you'll need:

-medium sized dish or wide bowl (I used a 9" pie plate similar to )

-milk (I used 3/4c of 2% milk)

-food coloring

-dish soap (I used dawn blue soap)

-q tip

Instructions:

Pour milk into your dish or bowl.

Drop a few drops of food coloring (more colors = more colorful patterns).

Dip your q tip into the dish soap.

Dab at the milk and watch the color burst.

Ta da magic milk paint!  Once the dishsoap dissolves into the milk it will no longer burst.  The kids then swirled the q-tip to "paint" the milk.

A little bit of science. . .

There is a bit of science behind this art project too!  The soap attracts the fat molecules in the milk.  When you introduce the soap to the milk and food coloring mixture the molecules race around trying to bond.  The food coloring appears to burst as the molecules get pushed around in the process. Once all molecules have bonded then the reaction stops.  The higher the fat content the more of a color burst you should see.

Experiment and have fun!  I would love to hear if you try out this activity and how it turned out!
