Point Lobos & Pfeffier Beach with kids

We enjoyed our day trip down to Point Lobos and Pfeifer Beach.  The drive isn’t too exciting starting out but once you hit the California coast on Highway 1 it is a beautiful and scenic drive!

Point Lobos is about 1.5 hours south from my parents home.  The park is clean and the Whalers cabin was a perfect little educational stop for my kiddos.  Parking is just down the road and was flat and easy to push the stroller.  The volunteer showed my kids what abalone looked like, old scuba gear, tools they used to catch and cook with and how different cultures brought different items and tools with them to Monterey.  There was whaling equipment, bones, blubber/oil and a video for the kiddos to see too!  You can spend as much or little time in here but the kids really enjoyed it.

Sandhill/Sea Lion Point trail is wheelchair/stroller accessible so we opted for that.  Parking is limited but lots of people were coming and going so we found parking easily.  There is tons of poison oak everywhere and I didn’t want Luke to run around and get any while we walked up to see the Sea otters and Sea Lions.  There was a docent on the trial with a nice binocular set up so the kiddos took turns looking for Sea otters.  We continued in the path up to look out on the rocks where the Sea Lions lay out.  It’s a gorgeous view and they loved spotting them as some blended into the rocks!

Next, we drove down to Pfeiffer Beach.  The road leading down to the beach is not clearly marked off the highway so I missed it the first time.  Then the single  bumpy road looks like it is private property but as you continue driving eventually you will find a booth to pay for parking.  The parking lot is extremely small so we had to wait to get a parking spot.  The weather was overcast and a little chilly but the kids had a blast playing in the sand and dipping their toes in the water.  One of the most interesting unexpected things we found was purple sand!

John and Julie were just as surprised as I was so all in all another fun filled day exploring with the kids!
